  • Bio: Born in Carolina, PR and an undergraduate student in UPRM working under Dr. Ortiz. Currently working on analysis of MPPT for solar panel analysis using MatLab's Simulink and NI's LabView.

Jaseft Canales-Oppenheimer

  • Bio: Jaseft Canales-Oppenheimer was born and mostly raised in Puerto Rico before moving to Riverside, CA where he completed his junior and senior years of high school. Upon high school graduation, Jaseft moved back to Puerto Rico where he attends the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM). Jaseft he interned at Honeywell Aerospace in Phoenix, AZ as an Engineering & Technology (E&T) intern under Engineering Test Services (ETS). During the summers of 2011 and 2010 he interned at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX as a NASA Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholar and currently serves as a NASA Student Ambassador all year round.

Yancy Diaz-Mercado

  • Bio: Born and raised in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, graduated from electrical engineering in the area of control systems at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in 2011. He is a GEM Fellow sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he worked during the summers as a GEM Intern, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is a graduate student pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Controls. While at Minds2CREATE, some of my projects included the design, construction and synchronization of a nonholonomic robot; a power transfer and speed controller scheme for a DC motor load with a thermoelectric generator source using power electronics; and a voltage regulation scheme for a thermoelectric generator through the use of a novel voltage-boost topology.

Anthony Flores
  • Anthony Flores

  • Bio: Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in May 1, 1992. Anthony Flores is currently pursuing his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. Currently in his fourth year of study, he is participating in Undergraduate Research on Nuclear Energy Systems in Puerto Rico under the supervision of Dr. Eduardo Ortiz and Annular MOSFETs SPICE model implementation under the supervision of Dr. Gladys Ducoudray. He is a member of the Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Campus Verde: Green Buildings and Sustainability, and the UPRM Marching Band and Orchestra. His research experience varies from Advanced Storage Electronic Systems in rechargeable batteries to analog circuits testing.

Sergio Garcia
  • Sergio Garcia

  • Bio: Originally from Puerto Rico, Sergio Garcia-Vergara graduated magna cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in June 2011. Sergio has received several honors and awards, which include: the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, ECE Marion & Henry Bourne Graduate Fellowship, Goizueta Foundation Fellowship, member of the Dean's list throughout his studies, and a recipient of the PR-LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Program) scholarship. During his time in the Minds2CREATE research group, Sergio worked with Dr. Ortiz to build a small nonholonomic autonomous robot capable of reaching the center of an arbitrary maze.

  • Bio: I am an Electrical Engineering undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus. I have lived in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico all my life. My current research consists of using a HeNe laser and optics set up to measure the birefringence property of ferromagnetic solutions when exposed to a dc magnetic field. I hope to work on an interdisciplinary research project that involves a Biomedical related application.

  • Bio: Currently, Arnold is a senior student in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. In his time on Minds2Create Arnold researched the administrative and regulatory approach in Germany regarding their photovoltaic technology, approval process and implementation considerations. Germany is known as the leading market for photovoltaic technology in Europe and the findings from his research were used in a solar challenge initiative to help accelerate the use of photovoltaic energy in Puerto Rico.

  • Bio: I was born in Mayaguez but I've always lived in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Currently, I'm an Electrical Engineering undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez. My main goal is to enter graduate school to continue doing researches on issues of Power Electronics and Renewable Energy. I'm working of a development of a multimeter that measure the open circuit voltage and the short circuit current of PV cells.

  • Bio: Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Obtained his Bachelor(June 2011) and Master(Dec 2013) degrees in Electrical Engineering specialized in Control Systems from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. As an undergrad, he did research in several areas including automation, materials, and renewable energy. After graduating he started working as an Engineer at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in their R&D unit for modeling, instrumentation, and control of power conversion systems.

  • Bio: Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico but lived in Villalba, Puerto Rico. Electrical Engineering student at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. Worked as a volunteer in the Association of Muscular Dystrophy. In addiction, she was an active member in the college band ("Banda Colegial"), IEEE, United States Green Building Council and AIESEC. Recieved a Boeing Scholarship in 2009 and was a Lockheed Martin Scholar.

  • Bio: Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Louis Rosario is currently on his 5th academic year of a BS in Mechanical Engineering. As an active member of the IEEE Control System Society he is currently working on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle capable of performing a variety of applications under the supervision of Dr. Eduardo Ortiz.

  • Bio: I was born in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. During my undergraduate studies in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, I worked with Dr. Ortiz on the application of power electronics to renewable energy, namely solar and fuel cell energy harvesting circuits. Currently I am pursuing my MS and PhD degrees at MIT on electrical engineering working on VHF Power Converters.

Daniel Soltero

  • Bio: Obtained is Bachelor's Degree in June 2010 from ECE Department in UPRM. He is currently studying for his M.S./Ph.D. from the EECS Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is an NSF Fellow and he is doing research at the Distributed Robotics Lab, lead by prof. Daniel Rus, in CSAIL, MIT. During his undergraduate studies his research projects with prof. Eduardo Ortiz included optimal control for a Buck Converter and the development of an autonomous maze solving robot for the IEEE MicroMouse contest. NSF Fellow Ph.D. MIT Electrical Engineering

  • Bio: Born in Mayaguez in December 12, 1990. Obtained BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on December 2013. Worked with Minds2Create group since september 2011 in the quadcopter project. In march 2013, was selected to participate in the KY NSF-EPSCOR program for Minorities Appying for graduate Education (KYTS-MAGE) in the state of Kentucky. During summer 2013 was selected to work as an engineer intern for the U.S. DOT Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) in Washington DC.
